Been awhile…

Monday, October 26th, 2009

First I would like to say: hello! I’m super sorry I haven’t posted in awhile. These last few weeks have been really good, but stressful at the same time. Of course it is the same old, same old–getting ready for graduate school and preparing for a life without Alfred. But enough of that, it’s starting to get tiresome even thinking about it. I’ll press on and hopefully get accepted somewhere (please take me!). Haha.

Other than that, in the good category, I’ve been working on knitting. I typically crochet, but I figured I’d attempt knitting again, and I actually rather like it this time, which is a nice feeling. The first time I took up knitting I got super frustrated and gave up in all of two minutes. Maybe I’ve matured? Probably not.

Right now I shouldn’t really be posting on here–I’m working on an essay and a poem, but I figured I’d take a minute and just stop by. Hope everyone is doing well. I’m going to go outside, enjoy the nice day, and work on my essay.

Another Week Come and Gone

Monday, October 5th, 2009

This semester seems to be flying by. I barely have time to sit down and actually think about something to post here, let alone take photos for all of you. I promise photos are coming soon. I finally found my camera cord! Hurrah. Right now? I am swamped with midterms, not exams, but essays. Lots and lots of essays. I am currently working on my essay for my formal poetry class. I am having a lot of fun with it. I wrote most of it over the weekend, but the poem gave me a lot of trouble. It is a poem written with the Sapphic stanza, which was fun to work with, but I think I am drained of creativity at the moment. I need to have some time to hang out with felines, crochet, and read novels that I’ve been meaning to get around to for ages.

I’m not sure what I’ll read while I am home. I have half a ton of books just waiting for me. I like to read short story collections typically, because if I don’t finish the collection, it doesn’t mean I haven’t finished the story. Does that make sense? I think it does.

Oh well, I am off to work on my essay again, so hopefully it’ll be shiny for tomorrow… So! HAVE A FABULOUS DAY!

A late Saturday night–

Monday, September 28th, 2009

So here I am, 1:34 in the evening, washing dishes and working on a blog post. I love being at school, but I mostly love living in the honors house. I would post pictures of the house, but I just realized I lost the cord to my camera (or rather, it is buried in one of my many bags)–so, pictures will come when I retrieve from whatever location it is currently located in.

Tonight was a fantastic night! I love the weekends at Alfred. It means time to get some work done, but mostly time to rest and rejuvinate. It is also the time for lots and lots of cooking, which is what I did some of today. While it might not seem a very complex or exciting thing to make (mostly because it isn’t), I made a nice pot of black bean soup tonight and shared it with two of my housemates and two guests. It was delicious! I picked up the beans from Kinfolk (a local co-op) and well, pretty much everything else I added into it (including some chipotle powder). Now, everyone seemed to like it well enough, but I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t thicker and spicier. I suppose next time I’ll have to keep that in mind while I am slaving away over the stove for all of the half an hour it took to prepare. (By the by, I am not a domestic person by any stretch of the imagination, so working on a meal for thirty minutes is actually quite a long while in my mind).

Oh! I also finished up a pair of handwarmers this week–I crocheted them. I’ll post a picture of those later too. Other than that I worked awhile on an essay for a class, did some reading, some hanging out watching a movie (bad eighties flick, actually–Lost Boys).

After dinner I went out with some other friends of mine, in particular a friend who was visiting from his internship, which was really fun. We had midnight Chinese take-out, which is always good for the soul. We also went to a concert at the Knight Club in the Campus Center. The band we came in the middle of, I can’t remember the name of, but the band that played after them (and that we stayed for a couple of songs) was named Deer and the Headlights. They weren’t bad. Not my style, particularly, but I enjoyed watching everyone fluttering around and getting jiggy with it.

Well, it is late and I still have some dishes to do, so I think I am going to run. I hope everyone is having a fabulous weekend! I’ll be back soon with another entry.

And all of this insanity…

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Hello, hello!

I hope everyone is having a fabulous day. I am so far! Of course, it is only 10:18 in the morning, so I could have a complete reversal by the end of the day. I certainly hope I don’t. Yesterday I didn’t feel well, I think I had the beginnings of an ear infection, so that sort of ruined yesterday. Today, I feel much, much better.

So what has been up with me? I have been working on school work, as per usual. I wrote a sonnet this weekend for my Formal Poetry course, and I am still not quite sure I understand iambic pentameter. I am rather awful at poetry and the like, but at least I am trying. I have been slowly moving through Derrida’s “Archive Fever”, which is a really fascinating read, if you like theory (and I do believe, I do!). I’ve also been working on my personal statement for graduate school, which is really rather frightening and exciting all at once. Right now I am not ready to leave Alfred, but I suppose I might be by the end of the year (or more prepared, at the very least).

Well, I am going to run, but for my next entry I’ll bring shiny pictures along with me! I’ll show off the lovely Honors House, where I live.

Tootles, have a wonderful day!
Laura

Back to the grindstone…

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Another year came to pass and now it is time for my senior year. While I blogged last year, and I introduced myself in said blog, I suppose I should introduce myself again (so all of the new readers can get to know me–Hi new readers!). Hi! My name is Laura Emily Reyome. I am a senior here at AU, and my major of study is English literature. As well, I have a minor in Women’s Studies. Anything else of importance? Oh! I’m from Potsdam, New York–six hours north of here in theĀ  vicinity of the arctic circle (I jest, sort of).

So this is my senior year. Wow! The past three years have zipped by. It is hard to believe I am not a first year or at least a junior. How I got here is still beyond me. Well, I suppose I have to suck it up: I am a senior now.

Introductions, the end of the year, and other fun things…

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Hi! This is my first post on the Alfred Real Life blog, and I figure I should probably introduce myself (more so than my biography tells you about me).

So, to begin, my name is Laura. I am from Potsdam, NY (for those of you who don’t know this is up by the Canadian border in the middle of nowhere–even more rural than Alfred). I’m twenty-one years old as of this past February.

At Alfred University I am a junior English major with a minor in Women’s Studies. I participate in the Women’s Issues Coalition (the women’s group/feminist group on campus). I occasionally making Spectrum meetings; I identify as a lesbian. Most of the time I spend hanging around my room, doing work, reading books, and occasionally playing a video game or two.

So, today is a Thursday, which means this is one of my light days this semester. This also means I should probably be doing homework and using the time to my advantage. But! Today is fabulous out in Alfred. This does not happen nearly enough. So? I’d much rather spend my time in the sun. Though, right now I am in the computer lab of Seidlin (the English building), which is sort of counterproductive to my need to photosynthesize.

Sadly, I have a cold right now, so it actually feels better to be in doors than out of doors. Well, it’s not really much of a cold, but more of the sniffles. I hate being even slightly ill…

On to more interesting things… Tomorrow is Day of Silence. For those of you who don’t know, this is a day of remembrance in the LGBT(add whatever other letters you’d like) community. I plan on participating, which is always interesting because I tend to be fairly talkative in my classes.

Well, even if my cold might get worse, I’m going to trek outside and enjoy the sun and the semi-warm weather. Chau!
