With break right around the corner…

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

students are getting to that breaking point. Finals, reports, papers, presentations, critiques. Its all happening, all at once. Students either buzz around campus like bee’s attempting to finish their work , or drag their feet due to sleep deprivation. Personally I love this time of year. I thrive on the thrill of meeting deadlines/ getting things in on time.

I have noticed that no one has blogged about food yet, and I feel the need to change this. I love food. Last week in the dinning hall there was shrimp. Being a big seafood lover, I ate a plate full…

Recent Events

If you live in the area and have seen the news, then you’ve heard about the devastation that our little town suffered. On the morning of October 28th 3 business , some with apartments above them, went up in flames on main street. No one was seriously injured but three of Alfred businesses are out, and 13 students have lost housing and most of what they have owned.
I always tell perspective students on Tours that, although Alfred is a small community, we don’t hide behind it, we embrace it. The events that unfolded after the fire, really shows why I stress this to everyone who visits. By 8:20 that morning , I was in printmaking, students were already leaving class early to donate clothes, food, money , household items, and whatever else they could to the students who were affected by the fire. By 9:30 am I had received 2 emails by Alfred University explaining the situation, and where we bring donations. Alfred has offered the students who lived in the apartments free on campus housing. And although the event was devastating, It was really amazing and moving to see how fast the community came together.

And we’re back.

Break is over ( did it ever even start?) I was sick for most of it , which I guess is good considering that I’d rather be sick and rest at home , then to miss class. I worked here on Monday and gave a bunch of tours, all the families were very excited, despite the cold weather were having.

I’ve started doing observation fieldwork for my education classes. I actually am back at my old high school, which is somewhat surreal. As I walk through the halls Im not shoved anymore, but rather I hear ” Watch out shes a teacher.”

Its all very odd to me.

My school also recently got smartboards. My teacher and I have been attempting to figure them out. You can do lots of creative things with them , especially as an art teacher! Here I am next to it( also I would like to note that I made that  dress I am wearing out of a white bed sheet from salvo that I dyed and designed !)

In other news the conference bike is here in all of its glory…call Admissions and come take a spin on it with us!

Its October already!

Hello all!

It has been quite the week . Projects are starting to pile up and midterms are next week. Word on the street is that there is 7 weeks left in this semester. Now that seems a bit outrageous to me, but I took a look at my handy dandy planner , and it’s true. it seems like yesterday that is was 70 degrees outside, today all the leaves have seem to change to their new beautiful hues , and tomorrow it will snow. I joke, but before you know it, winter will be on its way!

My classes are going superbly. In Fact I have some aquatint etchings I did in my Advanced print studio to show you all!  The image is the same, but the second one is done using 3 separate plates that you ink different colors ( Yellow, Red , Blue) to get a wide variety of colors. I apologize , as the prints look much better in real life. But I was in the studio working until 3 am this morning and all I had on me was camera phone so I took pictures using that. You’ll just have to come visit if you want a better looksie! :)

Hello All!

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Hello perspective students, parents with children who are ready to flee the nest, and whomever else who may stumble upon this. My name Is Courtney Wilcox , and I am currently a Junior here at the quaint Alfred University. I am getting my Bachelor of Fine Arts at the SUNY college of Ceramics, and I am minoring in Art education. I am from the area ( Bath) and even commuted my first year here at Alfred. I’ve lived in the area for most of my life, so if you have any questions such as: Where is there a good place to eat on a budget? or Which Salvation Army is better, Hornell or Bath? - I would be more than happy to guide you!

Speaking of guiding , I am also a tour guide here at Alfred Univeristy, so maybe I’ll see your bright and eager faces sometime soon!

This fall has been somewhat surreal. I keep telling myself that I am a junior , and that I am at the halfway point, but my mind wont really except it. To be ever so cliche, time has really flown by, I honestly dont know where the past two years have gone.

Well enough reminsing … I’m off to art history! But again feel free to ask me any questions!
