With break right around the corner…

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

students are getting to that breaking point. Finals, reports, papers, presentations, critiques. Its all happening, all at once. Students either buzz around campus like bee’s attempting to finish their work , or drag their feet due to sleep deprivation. Personally I love this time of year. I thrive on the thrill of meeting deadlines/ getting things in on time.

I have noticed that no one has blogged about food yet, and I feel the need to change this. I love food. Last week in the dinning hall there was shrimp. Being a big seafood lover, I ate a plate full…

The Busy Buzz

Monday, November 16th, 2009

So, about this time of year there is a buzz around campus. For each year I have been at Alfred, I noticed that the students really have no concept of how short a semester really is, and what little time we have here. So, student organizations start punching out all their last minute events and goals, students start wrapping up their semester with papers, homework, and exams.

While I am just as busy as everyone else, I am not stressed because their is my Senior year and I am savoring my last experiences here at Alfred. I’d like to lead you to a few Alfred University resources that have set me at ease:

Where’s the snow?

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Today was beautiful! Not a cloud in the sky and sunny! I was very happy to give a tour today and it went great! I have been noticing that the weather this year is not up to par with last year.  Usually by now it has begun to snow and we say good bye to the sun.  Though I am not complaining, I find myself asking where is the snow?  I am enjoying not having so much work.  Everything seems to be calming down homework- wise.  After last week when I had a large paper to write, the semester is definatly winding down.  I’m getting anxious to go home now that Im not so busy.  Thanksgiving is only two weeks away!!! Actually I didnt have a ride home until recently. That was stressful.  But now life is pretty good here at Alfred.  :) Bye for now!

Disc is a real sport

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Hey guys. Although it is nice now, it’s time to start being cold. We just finished our last disc tournament last weekend and today is the last practice. Yes disc (not ultimate frisbee; the world frisbee is a brand name owned by Whamo) is an actual club sport here at Alfred. We play against schools from all over the area as well as all over the United States. Last weekend’s tournament had students from Brockport, UB, Houghton, Roberts Westlyean, and other Buffalo/Rochester teams. In the spring we head down every year to Savannah Georgia for a national tornament.

Those of you who haven’t played before might be asking… what is this “disc” business he’s talking about? Well, imagine a game where you get on the field, start running/sprinting/juking/jumping/diving and don’t stop until someone scores a point. Now imagine doing that for an hour and a half. Now imagine doing that 6 times in one day. Sore is an understatement. The game is like doing chess on a treadmill. The offical rules of disc can be found at www.upa.org but to simplify: It’s played on a 70 yard by 40 yard field (15 yards extra on each side for endzones, so it’s a full football field) with two seven-player squads using a high-tech plastic disc. The object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponent’s end zone. A player must stop running while in possession of the disc, but may pivot and pass to any of the other receivers on the field. The job of the defenders is to hit the disc out of the air to gain possession of the disc. Anytime it hits the ground it turns over to the other team. With a team of over 20 people, 5 hours of practice per week and 2 hours of game time per week, you can tell this is more than a club. Shown here is Shane after a very nice winning point for our team. You can see the layer of ice over the turf.

This should just show how open we are to new things. Disc is still a relatively upcoming sport with only around 1,000 recognized college teams. It wasn’t all that popular until around the late 90s and has exploded in the recent years due it it’s fast pace and nonstop action. The same way that we were the first school to have men and women in the same classroom and one of the first to have people of all races studying together, Alfred is not afraid of change has has been on the cutting edge for new thought and technology.

Enough campus promotion… let’s hear from some disc players. Send a comment if you have played before or would like to play.

Recent Events

Monday, November 16th, 2009

If you live in the area and have seen the news, then you’ve heard about the devastation that our little town suffered. On the morning of October 28th 3 business , some with apartments above them, went up in flames on main street. No one was seriously injured but three of Alfred businesses are out, and 13 students have lost housing and most of what they have owned.
I always tell perspective students on Tours that, although Alfred is a small community, we don’t hide behind it, we embrace it. The events that unfolded after the fire, really shows why I stress this to everyone who visits. By 8:20 that morning , I was in printmaking, students were already leaving class early to donate clothes, food, money , household items, and whatever else they could to the students who were affected by the fire. By 9:30 am I had received 2 emails by Alfred University explaining the situation, and where we bring donations. Alfred has offered the students who lived in the apartments free on campus housing. And although the event was devastating, It was really amazing and moving to see how fast the community came together.

PINK!

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Wow its been a while. Sorry! Everything has been so busy around here and Ive gotten pretty caught up in it. Last Friday was our schools “pink out” for breast cancer awareness, There was pink EVERYWHERE! They have this fantastic slogan, “Keep second base safe” and it was pretty cool to see so many faculty, staff, and students wearing it. Even king Alfred got to wear one (no big deal, I got to climb up the statue and put the shirt on him! http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/photo.php?pid=3293429&id=6872547482 ) wee all grouped around him and it was just a huge sea of pink. We took a picture and it got to be in a bunch of newspapers. Friday night was the pink ball, it was great! Everyone was all dressed up and pretty! Haha. Saturday was the pink out football game and the football players all got pink armbands and mouth guards. Basically it was a school wide awareness raising event and plus, we got to donate a lot of money to Susan G. Komen. Whohooo! Okay I’m off to class. Have a good Monday!

Individuals Inspired United

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Yesterday was a sad day for many in our student body. There was an apartment fire on main street and, while nobody was seriously inured, both apartment renters and business owners lost all their posessions. Though it was an unfortunate event, I am impressed at how it has brought the community together. To get a better idea of what I mean read this:

“Our latest information is that seven Alfred University students were permanently displaced by the fire. Those seven all lived in apartments above either West Side Liquor or the Alfred Sports Center.

There are another nine people who were living in apartments in the yellow brick building that has The Collegiate, Kampus Kave and Hair Care on the first floor. That building sustained heavy smoke and water damage from the fire. Tenants will be allowed into their apartments today to reclaim as many of their possessions as possible, but they will not be able to live there until the fire clean-up and restoration are complete. Those who were living in the red brick building, which houses Alex’s and the Panda Express restaurant, are able to return to those apartments. Fire and code officers have determine the building is safe for occupancy, and utilities have been restored.

The University is providing on-campus housing at no charge for the rest of the semester to all students who were permanently or temporarily displaced by the fire. AVI Fresh, the University’s dining services contractor, has provided free meals for those students.

Any students who lost books, computers and course work are being asked to contact their professors to let them know they were affected by the fire so that accommodations may be made for this semester.”

This comforts me to know that I am in a community where everyone is willing to come together and accomodate those in need.

On a happier note we have a new way to tour our campus and it’s really fun!

Bike Tour

Been awhile…

Monday, October 26th, 2009

First I would like to say: hello! I’m super sorry I haven’t posted in awhile. These last few weeks have been really good, but stressful at the same time. Of course it is the same old, same old–getting ready for graduate school and preparing for a life without Alfred. But enough of that, it’s starting to get tiresome even thinking about it. I’ll press on and hopefully get accepted somewhere (please take me!). Haha.

Other than that, in the good category, I’ve been working on knitting. I typically crochet, but I figured I’d attempt knitting again, and I actually rather like it this time, which is a nice feeling. The first time I took up knitting I got super frustrated and gave up in all of two minutes. Maybe I’ve matured? Probably not.

Right now I shouldn’t really be posting on here–I’m working on an essay and a poem, but I figured I’d take a minute and just stop by. Hope everyone is doing well. I’m going to go outside, enjoy the nice day, and work on my essay.

end of october?

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Hey Everyone, another week has come and gone! Its thursday and I am tired! Tomorrow and today we are firing off a soda kiln at cone three, which should be fun! I also found out a happy potter tribute band is coming and i think its totally EPIC! However, I am terribly excited, because I could be classified as an all out nerd. I suppose I am just really easily amused.

Birthdays!

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

This Monday my friends and I celebrated my roommates 20th birthday!  We had such a good time! We went to a restaurant called Marinos in Hornell. The food was wonderful. I arranged for the waitress to bring a piece of cake with a candle out at the end of dinner for my roommate, she loved it!  This weekend my best friend is coming because next Tuesday is MY 19th birthday! So this weekend all my friends and I will be celebrating! I cant wait, specially since i have not seen my best friend since August.

Work has been going well. At the student calling job I got a very large pledge that I am quite proud of! :) Tours have been great and so has the weather! Although I think I am finally prepared for the cold.  It now has my permission to snow. hahaha!

Ive been quite stacked with homework this week.  I have a paper due Friday, yes thats tomorrow…but I will get it done! Speaking of the paper I should go and do that…Later!
